How to Care for Your Stone Beaded Bracelets
Stone beaded bracelets are low maintenance by nature. Natural stone is durable, and a well made bracelet on quality cord will last for years with minimal effort. A few simple habits make the difference between a piece that ages well and one that deteriorates faster than it should.
Know your materials
Not every stone behaves the same way. Harder stones like onyx and jasper are robust and handle daily wear well. Others can be more sensitive to moisture or sudden temperature changes. The stringing cord matters too. Quality elastic or knotted cord will stretch over time with heavy daily use, which is normal and fixable rather than a reason to discard a piece you like.
Understanding what your bracelet is made from helps you care for it appropriately rather than applying the same approach to everything.
Keep chemicals away
Put your bracelets on after you've finished with aftershave, cologne, or moisturiser. These products build up on stone surfaces over time and can dull the finish or weaken the cord. It's a small habit that makes a noticeable difference over months of daily wear.
The same applies to swimming pools and cleaning products. Chlorine and household chemicals are harder on natural stone and elastic than most people expect. Take them off before swimming or cleaning and they'll last considerably longer.
Clean gently
A soft dry cloth wiped over the beads after wearing removes skin oils and everyday dust before they build up. If something more stubborn needs attention, use a barely damp cloth rather than soaking the bracelet. Excess moisture works into the spaces between beads and can stretch or weaken the cord over time.
A very soft brush can help clean between beads without scratching the stone. Avoid chemical cleaners entirely. A quick wipe and dry is almost always sufficient.
Store carefully
Keep bracelets separate rather than piled together where they can scratch or tangle. A soft pouch, a fabric lined box, or individual cotton wrapping all work well.
Store away from direct sunlight and humidity. Bathrooms are convenient but the moisture isn't good for elastic or stone over time. A cool, dry drawer or jewellery box keeps everything in better condition with no extra effort.
Check them occasionally
Every few weeks, gently stretch the elastic to check whether it's starting to lose its tension. Run your fingers along the strand and feel for any loose beads or signs of wear on the cord. Catching these things early means a simple restringing rather than losing beads at an inconvenient moment.
Protect from prolonged sun and heat
Natural stone colours can fade with extended exposure to direct sunlight, and heat affects elastic more than most people realise. Store bracelets away from windowsills, hot cars, and warm drawers when you're not wearing them. It takes no effort and preserves both the colour and the structure.
Repair rather than replace
Even with good care, the cord on a regularly worn bracelet will eventually need replacing. When that happens, it's worth restringing rather than discarding. Most bracelets can be restrung with fresh elastic relatively easily, either by a local jeweller or carefully at home with the right materials.
At Rolf Skeldon, if the cord on one of our stone beaded bracelets stretches or breaks, send it back to us and we'll restore it. A well made bracelet with quality stones is worth keeping. We'd rather help you keep it than see it replaced.
That offer reflects the same principle behind everything we make: buy once, look after it, keep it for years.
